Biography
Pianist Mirian Conti, born in Corrientes in northeast Argentina, pursued initial studies in piano and general music in Buenos Aires before relocating to the United States. There she completed both a bachelor’s and master’s degree at New York’s Juilliard School under teachers including Richard Fabre, Josef Raieff, and Byron Janis. Although her Argentine training had centered chiefly on European masters, Conti encountered Argentine music—particularly tango—only after arriving in New York. During the 2005-2006 academic year she was named one of Juilliard’s 100 Outstanding Alumni; in 2007 she joined the faculty of the school’s evening division.
Her recital appearances have included Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall in New York as well as Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, and she has performed as concerto soloist across five continents. Conti has also presented lecture-recitals and masterclasses on Spanish music at Oberlin College, the Eastman School of Music, and the López Buchardo National Conservatory in Buenos Aires, among other institutions. She regularly serves on competition juries and has established two events of her own: I Certamen Musical Rioplatense in Buenos Aires and the New York City International Tango Competition for classical musicians.
Her recorded output comprises more than fifteen albums, beginning with the 1988 PolyGram collection Gypsy Dances. While many titles focus on Argentine repertory, she released an album of Chopin’s Mazurkas on the Steinway & Sons label in 2011 and subsequently recorded two further albums of Argentine music for the same imprint. Numerous releases spotlight lesser-known composers working in both contemporary and popular-influenced idioms. Conti has recorded for Toccata Classics, Koch International, and Albany, among other labels; she moved to Grand Piano in 2017 for an album of music by Lalo Schifrin and issued Tangorama: An Anthology of 20th Century Tango, Vol. 1 on that label in 2021.
