Finnish dream pop outfit Mumrunner established its identity through a pronounced melodic thread that persisted amid even its most raucous passages. The group threaded that melodic focus into layers of psychedelic shoegaze guitar textures, evolving from its boisterous early phase toward the polished arrival of its first full-length effort, Valeriana, issued in 2020.

The band took shape in Tampere, Finland, during 2014. Its original lineup—bassist Kati, drummer Juuso, singer Jukka, and guitarist Sauli—produced an ethereal yet forceful strain of dreamy melodic rock. Following a handful of tracks posted online, Mumrunner delivered the Full Blossom EP in 2015 and followed it with the Gentle Slopes EP in 2016. Across those releases the quartet pursued a traditional shoegaze approach, marked by weighty drumming and intermittent surges of feedback that surfaced within otherwise measured compositions. Partway through sessions for its debut album, the group experienced a sweeping personnel shift that brought in drummer Senni alongside vocalist and second guitarist Michael. Recording continued with fresh material, and the ensemble’s aesthetic moved in a noticeably more refined direction once Valeriana emerged in spring 2020.
