Murali Coryell, the offspring of fusion guitarist Larry Coryell, deliberately steered away from his father's stylistic path and instead concentrated on blues and soul. His first record appeared in 1995 as Eyes Wide Open, with the follow-up arriving four years afterward in the form of 2120. Captured at Todd Rundgren's Bearsville Studios in Woodstock, NY, that album served as the debut release for the newly launched CZYZ imprint, which Marshall and Kevin Chess—the sons of original Chess Records founders Leonard and Phil—had established. Coryell enlisted drummer Rod Gross and bassist Bill Foster for the project. In 2000 he joined his father and brother Julian to create the collaborative album Coryells.
