Irish singer/songwriter Nicky Byrne first gained fame through his years as a member of the hit-making boy band Westlife. Before that chapter, he had been pursuing semi-professional football. A live audition ultimately brought him into the fold after the act, then operating as IOYOU, dismissed three participants on Simon Cowell’s recommendation. Rebranded as Westlife, the group sought two replacements; Byrne and Brian McFadden were selected, completing the lineup alongside Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, and Shane Filan.

Over the next 14 years the ensemble logged widespread chart success outside the United States, where their sole hit single arrived in 2000 with “Swear It Again.” McFadden exited in 2004 to prioritize family life, and in 2012 the remaining members disbanded permanently. Byrne subsequently hosted programs on both radio and television, among them an appearance on the British reality series Strictly Come Dancing. He returned to recording in 2016 with his first solo album, Sunlight—the final Westlife alumnus to issue a solo project. The release aligned with his participation in that year’s Eurovision Song Contest, where he represented Ireland with the title track “Sunlight.”
