Nicolas Bougaïeff, a French-Canadian producer and DJ now based in Berlin, channels a lifelong passion for dance music together with formal training in electro-acoustic and contemporary classical composition to craft densely layered, sci-fi-tinged techno. His 2020 NovaMute album The Upward Spiral fuses abrasive industrial textures with powerful beats to generate elaborate, high-speed rhythmic structures, while Begin Within, issued in 2022, explores futuristic avant-pop terrain. Beginning with the 2024 release EP1, a sequence of digital EPs concentrates on relentless, propulsive warehouse techno.

Raised in a modest Quebec town, Bougaïeff immersed himself in the 1990s rave culture. He first distributed tracks via pioneering netlabels and delivered his debut live set at a 1999 rave performed on cumbersome desktop computers. Shifting focus to experimental and electro-acoustic work, he obtained a composition degree from the Montreal Music Conservatory and produced music and sound design for video games. After relocating to Berlin in 2008, he co-established the music-production software firm Liine alongside Richie Hawtin, John Acquaviva, and additional partners. Bougaïeff contributed to the performance software used on Hawtin’s 2010-2011 Plastikman tour and earned a doctorate in minimal techno from the University of Huddersfield in 2013. That same year Traum Schallplatten issued Movements, a dynamic collaboration with Max Cooper, and Bougaïeff put out three minimal EPs on Trapez.

NovaMute, Mute’s reactivated techno imprint, released the 2017 EP Cognitive Resonance, with several tracks later appearing on the digital album Principles of Newspeak. Further 2018 output included the Mesh EP Dust, NovaMute’s Permutation Djinn, and the digital albums Les Sauvageries and 24 Miniatures. Two additional EPs arrived in 2019: On the Grid on NovaMute and Projections, created with Marcus C. Maichel. Bougaïeff and Mute founder Daniel Miller, working as Populist, issued a 2020 EP via The Temple & the Low Dive. Later that July, The Upward Spiral became Bougaïeff’s debut full-length on Mute, followed by the remix collection Higher Up the Spiral featuring contributions from Chris Liebing, Benjamin Damage, and others.

In 2022 Bougaïeff issued a set of earlier recordings on Denfabrik: Saccades et Paroxysmes integrated classical piano loops into techno frameworks, Dreamscape offered gentler, downtempo pieces, and Resilience Interlude presented atmospheric ambient explorations. He also completed Deckalog, an album of forceful techno tracks captured in ten days. Returning to Mute, Begin Within blended IDM, industrial techno, and experimental pop dominated by robotic vocals. The concise, enigmatic techno EP Recursive appeared in 2023, and the harder-edged EP1 launched a new series of digital EPs at the start of 2024.
