Biography
Traditional Maori music undergoes a contemporary transformation at the hands of New Zealand's Oceania, echoing the approach Enigma once took with Gregorian chanting and Deep Forest with African Pygmy song. Centered on vocalist and composer Hinewehi Mohi together with producer, arranger, and composer Jaz Coleman—originally from the industrial/punk/metal band Killing Joke—the project merges live Maori instruments and percussion with modern dance beats, atmospheric ambient backing, and Mohi's ethereal vocals. Oceania's self-titled debut album appeared in the spring of 2000.
