Nostalgia is often said to follow cycles of roughly 15 to 20 years, placing the Los Angeles alternative rock band Operator squarely in rhythm with that pattern. Their sound—marked by powerful, resonant singing and guitar lines shaped by punk and metal—evokes the grunge style that defined 1992, the year Soundgarden and Pearl Jam first entered the wider rock conversation. What began as a one-man effort from vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist Johnny Strong later grew into a full group; Strong also works as a stunt performer, competitive fighter, and supporting actor, appearing briefly in Ridley Scott’s war film Black Hawk Down. Operator’s earliest release, the 2004 self-issued demo Can You Hear Me Now, drew interest from Atlantic Records and led to a contract in 2005. Strong initially tracked the label’s debut album alone, yet the sessions eventually incorporated lead guitarist Paul James Phillips, previously of the nu-metal act Puddle of Mudd, along with rhythm guitarist Ricky Thomas, bassist Wade Carpenter, and drummer Dorman Pantfoeder. With the lineup complete, Operator issued their Atlantic debut, Soulcrusher, in the summer of 2007.
