Pants Yell! crafts bright, unassuming pop that echoes a pared-back U.S. take on the C-86 aesthetic from earlier eras. The Cambridge, Massachusetts trio first joined forces in 2003. While studying art in Boston, Andrew Churchman and Sterling Bryant started composing and tracking material inside dormitories and cellar spaces. Churchman handles guitar and lead vocals, Bryant covers bass, keyboards, and harmony vocals, and Carly Smith supplies drums plus backing vocals. Their first appearance on record came during the summer on the Asuras Records collection Watermelon Should Last Forever, where they contributed the track “Electroclash Is the Noose Around My Neck.” Shortly after, the Italian imprint Best Kept Secret issued the cassette-only album Our Horse Calls after Churchman mailed them a CD-R demo alongside an order. Several self-released home recordings preceded the band’s proper debut, Songs for Siblings, which arrived in 2004; the set was captured in a 16-track analog facility and drew widespread praise from indie outlets across the United States and abroad. The 7-inch EP ’83 in ’05 surfaced in 2005. Once the members completed their studies, 2006 brought a heavier touring itinerary that took them through the United States, Europe, Sweden, and Iceland while promoting the third album, Recent Drama. In 2007 Casey Keenan, previously of Major Stars, joined on drums, and the group tracked its fourth album, Alison Statton, issued by Soft Abuse Records late that year. Received Pronunciation followed in 2009.
