Hailing from New York, post-punk trio Patio builds taut, angular compositions whose incisive humor and melodic strength offset their brooding undercurrents. Emerging in the middle of the 2010s, the group quickly drew neighborhood attention and inked a deal with Brooklyn-based Fire Talk ahead of their first full-length, Essentials, in 2019; three years later they resurfaced with the more polished Collection, still retaining their trademark bite.

Lindsey-Paige McCloy on vocals and guitar, Loren DiBlasi on vocals and bass, and Alice Suh behind the drums initially conceived Patio as an idea in 2015. Although each member was already immersed in the city’s independent music community, only McCloy had prior band experience; DiBlasi and Suh both picked up their instruments specifically to realize the project. Trading solely on word-of-mouth, the three booked their inaugural show before year’s end and began laying down tracks for a debut EP. Early support slots alongside Deeper, Ovlov, B Boys, and White Lung, plus a first appearance at SXSW, preceded the April 2016 arrival of the five-song Luxury EP. Drawing from Cate Le Bon, Household, and vintage British post-punk, the record established their foundational approach, with McCloy and DiBlasi trading lead vocal duties. Continued live work and industry relationships eventually secured a contract with the respected indie Fire Talk Records. Essentials, tracked in Toronto, appeared in April 2019; its jagged arrangements and wry, inward-looking lyrics earned critical favor, prompting the year-end standalone single “Reality State.”

The ensuing global pandemic imposed an extended break during which each musician navigated personal shifts that would later inform new material; geographic separation followed, as McCloy relocated to Los Angeles and Suh to Berlin. Upon reconvening, fresh influences—David Bowie, Bernini, and Laura Branigan among them—surfaced, bringing deconstructed disco rhythms and wide-ranging cultural allusions into a brighter yet more cohesive sound. That evolution culminated in the September 2023 release of their second album, Collection.
