Biography
Renowned for piano technique rivaling that of Oscar Peterson, Paul Smith nonetheless chose not to devote himself wholeheartedly to jazz. Early collaborations included a 1941 engagement with Johnny Richards and a period of military service, after which he joined Les Paul from 1946 to 1947 and Tommy Dorsey from 1947 to 1949; he then settled in Los Angeles and pursued a career as a studio musician. Both his trios and his solo performances yielded frequent recordings. Additional sessions paired him with Dizzy Gillespie, Anita O'Day, Buddy DeFranco, Louie Bellson, Steve Allen, Louie Bellson, and Stan Kenton, among others, while he also accompanied Ella Fitzgerald on tours at intervals between 1956 and 1978. Smith died in Torrance, California, on June 29, 2013, at the age of 91.
