Paulinho Pedra Azul ranks as the best-known musician to emerge from Minas Gerais following Milton Nascimento, with his renown stemming from songs steeped in the region’s lyrical seresta tradition of intimate romantic ballads while also reflecting the imprint of the Beatles and Clube da Esquina. “Jardim da Fantasia” stands as his signature work, yet Jota Quest covered his “Tele-Fome” in 2000. Remaining an independent artist for his entire career, he nevertheless surpassed 300,000 albums sold.

Pedra Azul first appeared in festivals and local performances across the interior of Minas Gerais during the late 1960s. He relocated to São Paulo in 1978, where he collaborated with singer and actor Saulo Laranjeira. His debut LP, Jardim da Fantasia, arrived in 1982 and gained traction through its title track. Six years afterward he moved back to Minas Gerais and established residence in Belo Horizonte. In 2001 he took part in the Veredas de Minas program at Rio’s Bank of Brazil Culture Center alongside fellow Mineiro artists Fernando Brant, Tavinho Moura, and Mestre Tizumba, and that same year he joined Wagner Tiso to record a collection devoted to the songs of Godofredo Guedes, father of Beto Guedes.
