Biography
Swedish producer and engineer Peder Mannerfelt moves with equal fluency between pounding club tracks and abrasive experimental pieces that echo the stark minimalism of Pan Sonic. Operating out of Stockholm, he began his career at Murlyn Studios, where he contributed to the making of Britney Spears’ 2003 hit “Toxic.” Under the alias the Subliminal Kid he turned out minimal techno, issuing close to a dozen 12-inch singles via Ann Aimee and Perspex Recordings. Together with Van Rivers (Henrik von Sivers) he reworked material by Massive Attack and Lykke Li while also handling full-length projects for Fever Ray, with whom he toured, and Blonde Redhead.
He launched the analog-synth ambient project Roll the Dice alongside Malcolm Pardon, previously of Kinky Machine; their self-titled debut appeared on Digitalis in 2010, followed by two further albums and two EPs—including one collaboration with Pole—on the Leaf Label.
Mannerfelt abandoned the Subliminal Kid moniker in 2012 and began releasing under his own name. London-based duo Emptyset embraced his jagged electronics and put out the EPs Come Closer (2012) and Stockholm Recorded (2013) on their We Can Elude Control imprint. His first proper solo album, Lines Describing Circles, arrived to strong reviews on Digitalis in 2014. He soon established his own label, through which he issued EPs I and II plus material by Klara Lewis, and he also appeared on a split EP with Pär Grindvik released by Stockholm LTD. In 2015 Sendai’s Archives Intérieures imprint presented his CD The Swedish Congo Record, a purely electronic reinterpretation of the 1950s field-recording series The Belgian Congo Records.
His most visible period to date came in 2016, when he released the album Controlling Body and the EP Transmissions from a Drainpipe on his own label, a live EP via Berlin Atonal, and 12-inch singles on Numbers and Hinge Finger.
