Biography
Emerging from the wide-ranging indie rock collective Oneida, the improvisational pair known as People of the North centers on keyboardist Bobby Matador and drummer Kid Millions, who together craft ever-evolving sonic environments drawing from post-rock experimentation, tactile electronic manipulation, and elements of psychedelic exploration. Although the project's foundation rests with Matador and Millions as its unchanging participants, additional performers frequently join them for live performances and studio recordings, and at times the full Oneida roster has taken the stage under the People of the North banner. Their initial release arrived in 2010 via Jagjaguwar Records with Deep Tissue, an effort that incorporated guitar contributions from Ex Models' Shahin Motia. This was followed in 2012 by the double album Steep Formations. Transitioning labels, the duo joined Thrill Jockey Records in 2013 to put out Sub Contra as their next recording. Their 2015 offering, Era of Manifestations, drew its name from Shaker religious history—a topic of fascination for Millions—and originated in a lengthy five-hour improvisational session involving Matador, Millions, along with Sightings bassist Richard Hoffman.
