French ska-funk collective Percubaba came together in 1997 on the grounds of Saint-Malo’s Lycee Maupertuis when two competing ensembles joined forces. The resulting eleven-piece roster featured vocalists Dup, Gaston, and Bidou alongside guitarist Julien “Youl” Richter, bassist Arnaud “La Fauve” Fauvel, keyboardist Nicolas Meheust, saxophonist David “Vidda” Bonomi, trumpeter Jérôme “Mr. Lul” Paitry, trombonists Rudy Loos and Ronan Simon, and percussionists Dan “Danesh” Voisin and Joël “Jo-Hell” Daventry. Following two years of nonstop live performances, the band tracked its inaugural four-song demo in 1999 and, twelve months afterward, established the independent imprint Foutadawa to issue a self-titled debut LP. Dream and Strup appeared in 2002; two years after that, Percubaba documented its widely praised stage show with a live album. The collective’s third studio album, AntistatiQ, reached stores in the autumn of 2006.
