Peter Ecklund earned his greatest recognition for serving as cornetist in Marty Grosz's Orphan Newsboys, reflecting a longstanding passion for jazz from the pre-swing period. Following his 1967 graduation from Yale, this skilled ensemble performer—whose sharp, enjoyable solos stand out—collaborated with numerous artists such as Gregg Allman, Maria Muldaur, Leon Redbone, and Paul Butterfield. In the years after completing his studies, he co-established the Galvanized Jazz Band, accompanied vocalist Paula Lockheart on tour, performed alongside rock groups, and pursued extensive freelance opportunities throughout the 1970s and into the early 1980s. His most significant step came with initial substitute appearances in Vince Giordano's Nighthawks, leading to a full-time role and co-leadership in the Orphan Newsboys upon their 1988 formation, an ideal showcase for his abilities. Ecklund, also proficient on the whistle, has appeared alongside leading figures in traditional and mainstream jazz at various festivals and parties while heading sessions on the Stomp Off and Arbors labels.
