An experimental post-hardcore outfit called Philm emerged from Los Angeles, California, assembled by Dave Lombardo of Slayer, Gerry Nestler from Civil Defiance, and Francisco "Pancho" Tomaselli, previously of War. Lombardo and Nestler originated the project in 2009 during a lull in Slayer's touring commitments. The power trio's music, which the musicians themselves label "rhythmic emotion," unfolds in elemental, powerful, and bipolar fashion, shifting between rhythmic exploration and atmospheric textures while offering only faint echoes of the members' prior work. Such raw and expressive traits led the group to sign with Mike Patton's Ipecac Records in 2012, resulting in the release of their debut album, Harmonic, before the year ended.
