Formed in London during 2006, Pocketbooks began crafting their prim yet sprightly indie pop songs, drawing primary inspiration from twee-pop forebears such as Belle & Sebastian and a milder nod to Camera Obscura. The founding members comprised Andy Hudson on vocals and piano, Daniel Chapman on bass, Emma Hall on vocals and keys, Ian Cowen on guitar, and Jonny Tansey on drums.

Their first single, “Cross the Line,” appeared on Atomic Beat Records during spring 2007. The following year brought a burst of festival dates and concerts, among them a slot at Sweden’s Rip It Up Festival with the Clientele and Pipas, while Make Do and Mend Records put out the band’s initial EP, Waking Up. How Does It Feel to Be Loved? issued the group’s first full-length album, Flight Paths, in summer 2009. Pocketbooks resurfaced two years later with the album Carousel.
