Biography
Emerging in 1998, Polbo took shape when five students attending the University of Puerto Rico in Humacao fused their passion for 1960s touchstones such as the Doors and the Beatles with the 1990s textures of Weezer and Nirvana. Following a pair of years spent performing before loyal audiences in Puerto Rico’s indie and punk circles, the group recorded a five-song demo intended for sale at concerts. Although internet praise and organic buzz sustained forward motion, advancement proved gradual, so only in 2005 did the demo secure a contract with Universal Music Latino. The imprint put out the band’s self-titled debut, which blended modern and retro elements, in 2006. The album earned a Latin Grammy nomination that year for Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
