Atlanta-based outfit Ponderosa cultivated a signature roadhouse style steeped in whiskey-soaked classicism after singer-guitarist Kalen Nash crossed paths with guitarist Kris Sampson, the head engineer at the city’s Nickel & Dime studio. Their shared musical instincts led them to recruit local musicians J.T. Hall on bass and vocals, John Dance on organ and keyboards, and Darren Dodd on drums and vocals, resulting in a lean yet polished take on Southern roots rock that fans would soon know simply as Rosa. The group’s first public offering arrived as the self-released EP Moonlight Revival in 2010. Strong live showings—both as support for the Whigs, Shooter Jennings, Old 97’s and similar acts, and on the stages of Austin City Limits and Voodoo Music—prompted New West Records to bring them aboard. Teaming with producer Joe Chiccarelli, Rosa issued its full-length debut, also titled Moonlight Revival, on the label in early 2011. A follow-up arrived the next year when Dave Fridmann helmed Pool Party, an album that steered the band sharply toward sweeping psychedelic dream-pop textures.
