Hailing from Toronto, Canada, Maryam Said records as Poolblood and crafts self-produced bedroom pop that incorporates punk and folk elements whenever it suits their vision. Raised in a religious household that discouraged engagement with mainstream music, Said connected first with the songwriting of Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens), an encounter that opened an expanding route of sonic exploration. After mastering guitar on their own and trading recordings with school peers, they absorbed the sounds of hardcore and noise rock. In 2018 Said began posting material online, which drew the attention of Shamir; he subsequently placed them on his Accidental Popstar label for the 2019 EP Yummy. Next Door Records then stepped in to issue the debut album Mole in 2023.
