Biography
Emerging from Boston's late-1990s underground hip-hop community, the white rap duo Porn Theatre Ushers drew from the production approaches of DJ Premier and Large Professor as well as the off-kilter rhyme styles of Ultramagnetic MC's, De La Soul, and Organized Konfusion. Motivated by deep enthusiasm for the music yet frustrated by its waning sense of humor, the pair sought to restore levity to rap by pairing sharply irreverent, inventive lyrics with distinctive, often playful beats.
Nabo Rawk and Mister Jason first connected in 1997 after fellow Boston rapper Esoteric made the introduction. Already active in the local scene, they discovered matching needs—Nabo searching for a DJ and Mister Jason looking for an MC to produce for—which sparked an immediate friendship and working alliance. Their initial break arrived the next year when Nabo Rawk tied for first place in the Biscuithead Battle freestyle contest, leading DJ Bruno to issue a 12" single on his fledgling Biscuithead Recordings label. Over the following years the duo issued singles such as "Me & Him" and "My Imagination," which earned underground praise and created modest buzz in rap circles while Mister Jason became a sought-after producer for other local MCs. In 2000 they issued their first substantial statement, the nearly LP-length EP Sloppy Seconds, which contained those earlier singles, collaborations with Cage and K-No Supreme, and additional new tracks.
