In the mid-'90s Eric Meltzer, performing as Mr. Eon, and Milo Berger, known as DJ Mighty Mi, joined forces as the High & Mighty and launched their own imprint, Eastern Conference. Their brief association with Rawkus Entertainment in 1999 generated nationwide attention, after which the pair withdrew once more to the independent circuit and channeled their heightened profile into advancing the Eastern Conference roster. Several early singles gradually drew interest, most notably the 1997 coupling of “Open Mic Night” with “The Meaning.” The next year brought another major release, “B-Boy Document” (1998), which enlisted El-P, Mike Zoot, and Mos Def. Rawkus then stepped in to issue the duo’s first album, Home Field Advantage (1999), along with a revised take on the prior single now retitled “B-Boy Document ’99” and featuring Mad Skillz in addition to Mos Def. Following the album’s favorable reception, the High & Mighty again retreated underground, this time accompanied by a larger following. In the years that followed they concentrated on the label, overseeing successive editions of the Eastern Conference All-Stars compilations, before delivering their second album, Air Force 1, in 2002.
