Portable draws its infectious rock edge from bands like Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, and the Smashing Pumpkins, while incorporating the melodic touch of Fuel and Collective Soul. Chance on vocals, Gus Ciceri on guitar, Brian Levy on drums, and Jeff Menke on bass laid down their first album, Secret Life, inside the former studio space once used by Supertramp at Media Vortex in Burbank, CA. Issued in mid-1999, the record’s post-grunge approach helped spread Portable’s reputation across the western states. By the arrival of the new millennium Menke had departed, making room for Sebastian Ciceri ahead of the group’s second release. That effort, Only if You Look Up, arrived via TVT in 2002 and wove in touches of space rock alongside dream pop.
