The Christian rap performer Promise embodies the victory of light over darkness, having passed his teenage years entangled in gang life and harmful conduct before turning toward faith-infused music. Midway through 2000 he issued his first album, Tell Me What You See, fifteen vividly detailed tracks that fuse urban rhythms with hip-hop refrains to illuminate the artist’s own hardships during his affiliation with the Grape Street Crips.
