Born as Karl-Heinz Schwab on 16 August 1924 in Germany, Bendix divided his time between stage work and running TWA’s Dusseldorf airport. His first sustained television exposure came in 1955 through regular slots on a Pittsburgh variety program, yet five further years passed before ‘Kriminal Tango’ delivered his initial hit. Joachim Relin’s German rendering of Buzz Clifford’s ‘Babysittin’ Boogie’ followed in 1961 and moved a million copies throughout Europe, exceeding the American original, while Bendix’s standing as a multilingual novelty act supported both a Las Vegas residency and a broader U.S. tour the next year. Commercial priorities began to dominate by the mid-1960s, after which stage and studio appearances grew infrequent. In all, twenty-four of his releases reached Germany’s Top 40 between 1956 and 1967.
