Gabriel Cassina, the Italian-born, Spain-based artist known as Regal, moved from the tough, dubbed-out techno of his 2012 album Thrive to the acid-drenched, underground, pounding stomp captured on the 2019 EP The Eyes, establishing himself among the techno scene’s most prominent figures while maintaining DJ residencies throughout Europe and delivering remixes for Nina Kravitz and Charlotte de Witte. He began performing at major Madrid venues at nineteen, blending deep underground techno with dubstep and drum’n’bass influences. Under the earlier alias Gabryel Casse he issued his first EP in 2010 and followed with multiple singles on Technomafia, TMR, and Naked Lunch during the subsequent two years. In 2012 he launched his own imprint, Involve, and introduced his debut release under the Regal name. Drawing from the European underground along with the work of Emmanuel Top and Hardfloor, he incorporated the 303 into the majority of his productions, yielding tracks that distilled the era’s heady underground techno aesthetic. A consistent run of further releases ensued, among them joint projects with Len Faki and Amelie Lens, while his acid-soaked DJ sets helped build his reputation across Europe. In 2019 he joined Alien Rain for the 303-bashing Acid Affair EP, which introduced tougher, harder textures to his sound; that same year he also made his first appearance on Bpitch Control with The Eyes, an EP that revisited the hard trance and distorted techno of the early ’90s.
