Biography
Renee Stahl brings a warm, gentle vocal presence to acoustic singer/songwriter work and children's folk material while also suiting atmospheric dance productions, allowing her to pursue all three avenues throughout her career. Her initial solo release, the fittingly named Melancholy Pop, appeared in 2002; shortly afterward she partnered with Brad bassist Jeremy Toback to create the children's music duo Renee & Jeremy, whose debut It's a Big World! came out in 2007. Beginning in the early 2010s her voice appeared on multiple EDM recordings by Ronski Speed and Bogdan Vix. Issued under the Renee & Friends banner, the 2015 children's collection Simpatico featured contributions from Colin Hay, Toad the Wet Sprocket's Glen Phillips, and Maya Rudolph.
Born in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and now residing in Los Angeles, Stahl launched her solo output on Woem Music in 2002; Melancholy Pop contained tracks she co-wrote with Kevin Hunter of Wire Train. A few years later her composition "Something Real" surfaced on the soundtrack to the 2006 crime drama The Dead Girl and later resurfaced on her follow-up solo album Hopeful. Romantic., which Big Helium Records issued in April 2007. That same year she and Jeremy Toback released It's a Big World! on One Melody Records, a collection of children's folk songs credited to Renee & Jeremy. The pair continued with C'mon in 2009. Two further sets arrived in 2012: the covers album A Little Love, which drew from the Monkees and R.E.M., and the holiday project Sunny Christmas.
During the early 2010s Stahl also began working with EDM producer Ronski Speed, who spotlighted her on the 2011 track "Out of Control" and the 2013 cut "Pink Skye." In 2014 she joined another producer and DJ, Bogdan Vix, on the single "Forever." Returning to children's repertoire, she issued the collaborative Renee & Friends album Simpatico on One Melody in 2015; guests included her childhood friend Molly Shannon. She continued the series in 2019 with Kindred, which contained duets with Lisa Loeb, Ziggy Marley, and Ida's Elizabeth Mitchell.
