Biography
Restiform Bodies stands as an enigmatic ensemble pushing the boundaries of hip-hop through radical experimentation, mirroring the way Sonic Youth and Swans dismantled punk conventions back in the opening years of the 1980s. Their output tends toward abrasive textures, somber atmospheres, and outright eccentricity. The collective consists of David Bryant, who handles songwriting and vocals under the Passage moniker, alongside Matt Valerio serving as percussionist and beatmaker via the Bomarr Monk identity, plus George Chadwick who wields synths, samples, and effects in the guise of Telephone Jim Jesus. Drawing from sources such as electronica, ghetto-tech, prog rock, and classic R&B, they pursued an intensely inventive take on the form that extended alternative rap past the outer limits previously set by Kool Keith and Cannibal Ox. Their sonic palette frequently evokes Stereolab more than any other influence, and this distinctive auditory profile combined with their visual presentation secured a recording contract via Anticon Records—the very collective to which Bryant is affiliated—resulting in the issuance of their self-titled debut in 2002 followed by TV Loves You Back in 2008.
