Biography
Among accompanists from Britain who emerged in the final decades of the twentieth century, few have matched Roger Vignoles in technical command and interpretive insight. Gerald Moore’s model of elevating the pianist from subordinate role to equal partner shaped his approach from the outset, equipping him with an instinctive understanding of varied song traditions and an ease that puts performers at their best. His own tastes reach equally comfortably into cabaret repertoire and the refined, atmospheric world of Duparc’s mélodies.
Born in Cheltenham on July 12, 1945, Vignoles pursued piano studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before deciding to devote himself to accompaniment. Additional training at the Royal College of Music and private lessons with Paul Hamburger led to his London debut at the Purcell Room in 1967. Between 1969 and 1971 he served as coach and répétiteur at the Royal Opera House. Soprano Elisabeth Söderström became one of his earliest steady partners; satisfied with both his playing and his manner, she engaged him repeatedly through the 1970s and 1980s. Sarah Walker, Thomas Allen, and Kiri Te Kanawa likewise began working with him during those years, the first two maintaining especially long associations that produced notable recordings. Their joint programs encompassed German lieder, French mélodie, and a wide-ranging selection of cabaret songs.
From 1974 to 1981 Vignoles taught accompaniment at the Royal College of Music. He became a frequent guest at leading festivals, including the Schubertiade in Feldkirch, and in 1997 devised the week-long “Landscape into Song” series at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall. In 1998 he founded the Nagaoka Winter Festival in Japan, serving as artistic director until 2002 and returning annually for master classes and recitals. He took part in the 2001 Schumann Festival in London and has performed Benjamin Britten’s Canticles on several occasions, among them a staged production in Barcelona. His master-class teaching reflects a particular sensitivity to young singers, encouraging them to deliver a few phrases before offering corrections. This capacity to foster comfort and elicit strong performances has made him a prized collaborator.
Vignoles remains in high demand, touring Japan with Mihoko Fujimura and North America with Measha Brueggergosman and Kate Royal. Standout recordings include the complete songs of Duparc with Walker and Allen, a collection of Fauré, Debussy, and Poulenc mélodies with Véronique Gens, debut recital discs by Katarina Karnéus and Jonathan Lemalu, and Schumann songs with Bernarda Fink that feature Frauenliebe und -leben. The 2009 release Britten: Before Life & After with Mark Padmore received awards in both France and England. That same year he launched a recital series at Wigmore Hall, which later presented a concert marking his seventieth birthday. His ongoing partnership with baritone Roderick Williams has yielded several acclaimed discs, among them Mirages: The Art of French Song in 2022.
