Biography
Hailing from a mix of California and Mexican heritage, Rudy De Anda creates breezy yet cinematic psych-pop and rock that reflects both cultural strands. After leading the psych-prog band Wild Pack of Canaries, he launched his solo career with the lo-fi Ostranenie in 2015. Later projects—Delay, Cadaver of a Day (2016), Tender Epoch (2020), and Closet Botanist (2023)—featured progressively higher-fidelity production, with the final release standing as the clearest and strongest presentation of his 1960s psych-pop leanings.
Born in Los Angeles to Mexican parents and raised in Long Beach, De Anda incorporates that city’s beach culture and relaxed atmosphere into his work. He fronted Wild Pack of Canaries through the early 2010s; when the group paused in 2013, he began compiling songs for his debut. The upbeat, Brian Wilson-esque Ostranenie EP arrived in 2015 and included contributions from Long Beach legend, keyboardist, and producer Isaiah “Ikey” Owens (the Mars Volta, Jack White). Delay, Cadaver of a Day revealed a darker, gritty side colored by punk and soul, while the inward-looking Tender Epoch paid tribute to his Mexican roots. He traveled to Austin to cut his next album, resulting in 2023’s Closet Botanist on Colemine Records, a more mature rendering of his West Coast beach sound that added personal detail and drew from the early output of the Velvet Underground and the Kinks.
