Marty James originated Scapegoat Wax as his personal endeavor, gaining visibility during his time enrolled at Chico State University. Music entered his life in early adolescence, when he completed an initial composition at age thirteen. At sixteen he worked his personal Technics setup to cut and blend material, build drum patterns, and arrange dub sequences.
The 1999 album Luxurious signaled Scapegoat Wax’s committed launch into studio recording, and that sustained effort produced tangible outcomes. Beastie Boy Mike D. detected the dense hip-hop funkadelics generated by Scapegoat Wax and placed him on Grand Royal. Vocal refinement received equal priority, turning the singer/songwriter dimension of Marty James into his hallmark trait.
Okeeblow embodied his swift ascent together with striking urban electronic grooves in summer 2001, yet the project drew scant notice after Grand Royal shut down. Hollywood Records nevertheless extended interest, so James assembled Swax for release the following autumn.
