Biography
Scott Hoying first rose to prominence singing baritone in the a cappella ensemble Pentatonix. Alongside bandmate Mitch Grassi he also maintained the side project Superfruit, a multimedia venture built around web videos and original songs, before stepping out on his own with the 2023 mini-album Parallel, where he adopted a sleek, introspective adult-contemporary style.
Born in Arlington, Texas, on September 17, 1991, Hoying began performing as a child and met Grassi at a young age. While attending Martin High School the pair befriended Kirstin Maldonado, and the three recorded a cover of Lady Gaga and Beyoncé’s “Telephone” in an unsuccessful bid to win a contest that would introduce them to the cast of Glee. After the attempt fell short they parted ways until Hoying learned of the NBC competition The Sing-Off and persuaded both Grassi and Maldonado to leave their respective colleges so the trio could audition.
They expanded the lineup with Avi Kaplan and Kevin Olusola, tried out for season three of the show, and ultimately claimed the top prize. The newly formed Pentatonix entered the studio in January 2012 to cut their debut EP, PTX, Volume 1, then immediately began touring behind the release. Over the following decade the group maintained an intense schedule, issuing ten albums, five of which were devoted to holiday material.
While Pentatonix were at the peak of their popularity, Hoying and Grassi revived Superfruit and released the full-length Future Friends in 2017. Hoying simultaneously guided a teenage a cappella ensemble called Acapop! KIDS, which competed on America’s Got Talent in 2022. That same year he issued his first solo single, “Mars,” paving the way for Parallel, the 2023 EP that showcased his polished, atmospheric pop approach.
