Biography
Among Russia's most prominent electronic outfits, SCSI-9 have assembled a striking body of lush, exploratory house and techno across imprints including Kompakt, Force Tracks, and their own Pro-Tez. Their productions typically layer wistful melodies inside kaleidoscopic dub effects and deep house-influenced chords, yielding direct yet richly textured pieces that remain both sublime and enchanting. Kompakt titles such as the 2006 album The Line of Nine rank among SCSI-9's most energetic and accessible works, whereas later efforts like the 2019 release Squares and Circles adopt a gentler, more restrained tone.
SCSI-9 began as Anton Kubikov's solo alias; he first took up DJ duties in 1994 at Ermitage, one of Moscow's earliest techno venues. After rising to become one of the city's leading club selectors and presenting a popular radio program, he turned to track production in 1997. The SCSI-9 name surfaced in 1999 with EPs issued by Force Tracks (Middle of the Way) and Salo (Maks Is Dreaming), together with the cassette album House Drop, which appeared on CD the next year. In 2000 Kubikov and Maxim Milyutenko pooled their gear and constructed a studio; the project formally became a duo the following year and commenced live appearances in 2002. Further releases followed on Trapez and Freizeitglauben as well as Force Tracks, which put out three more EPs before the 2003 full-length Digital Russian. That same year the pair made their Kompakt bow with the single "All She Wants Is." While continuing to issue EPs elsewhere, they remained with Kompakt for the EPs Mini (2004) and On the Edge (2005) plus the albums The Line of Nine (2006) and Easy as Down (2008). They also founded the Kompakt-distributed Pro-Tez Records. The fifth album, Metamorphosis, came out on Klik Records in 2012. Additional 12"s appeared during the decade, among them a 2015 split with Rebotini on Immer and 2018's "Pheotron" on 200. The duo's sixth album, Squares and Circles, was released by Apparel Tronic in 2019.
