Biography
Sea Hags carved out a fleeting existence that epitomized rock's self-sabotaging tendencies, their trajectory collapsing almost immediately after ignition. The quartet—Ron Yocom on vocals and guitar, Frankie Wilsey on guitar, Chris Schlosshardt on bass, and Adam Maples on drums—coalesced in Seattle during 1985 before shifting operations to San Francisco in pursuit of proximity to Hollywood's hair-metal orbit. Kirk Hammett of Metallica contributed to their inaugural demo, whose quality secured a Chrysalis Records deal and placed production of the 1989 self-titled debut in the hands of Mike Clink, the engineer behind Guns N' Roses. Filtering the gloss of 1980s sleaze metal through the Pacific Northwest's shadowy, enigmatic atmosphere—an undercurrent that anticipated grunge—the record earned widespread critical acclaim yet failed to register commercially. Internal fractures soon surfaced, culminating in a bitter dissolution midway through a European tour amid substance issues and scrapped shows. Their manager captured the moment by declaring, "There's only so far you can get with three junkies and one alcoholic." Any notions of regrouping stayed unrealized; Schlosshardt's fatal heroin overdose in 1991 sealed the band's end. Yocom has remained absent from public view, while fleeting speculation linked Maples to Steven Adler's vacated spot in Guns N' Roses. Wilsey, for his part, adopted the name Wilsex and briefly extended his career by joining Stephen Pearcy's Arcade.
