Hailing from Fargo, North Dakota, the trio Secret Cities specializes in sweetly haunting melodies steeped in lo-fi chamber pop. M.J. Parker and Charlie Gokey first crossed paths at band camp, where the pair began trading home-recorded cassettes under the White Foliage banner at age fifteen, sending material back and forth between opposite corners of the state. After three years of accumulating tapes, an acquaintance connected them with Baltimore’s Fall Records, which issued their debut album Zurich in 2005 while still crediting the project to White Foliage. Drummer Alex Abnos joined the lineup for the ensuing Midwest tour, after which the three musicians spent several years refining their approach. Western Vinyl signed the group in 2010, leading to the release of Pink Graffiti under the Secret Cities name—a psychedelic pop album shaped by the influence of Brian Wilson. Strange Hearts arrived the following year and continued probing the intersection of classic ’60s pop and lo-fi textures. A handful of singles surfaced across the next two years, culminating in the 2014 LP Walk Me Home.
