Selma Reis brings a nuanced interpretive focus to her performances as a vocalist. A household enthusiasm for serestas nurtured her earliest connection to song. She pursued vocal training in Brazil and France. Her debut arrived in 1987 with the independently issued Selma Reis. Two further albums preceded another self-titled recording made in London and shaped by arranger Grahaam Presket. Although the project drew major-label interest, she chose the boutique imprint MZA for Todo Sentimento. Ares de Havana, issued in 1999, centers on Cuban repertoire. Ahead of a tour across Cuba, she appeared in the stage production Abre Alas, which traces the life of Chiquinha Gonzaga; the engagement led to a role in the TV Globo series Chiquinha Gonzaga.
