Atlanta native Sequoyah Murray fashions an inventive, expansive style of music that fuses Afro-pop, gospel, Tropicália, dream pop, soul, and additional strands. His full-length debut, Before You Begin, arrived in 2019 and placed his rich, deeply resonant voice alongside creative, hopeful songwriting.
Raised in a musical household, Murray first accumulated experience within jazz and free improvisation circles. Atlanta’s hip-hop environment and an array of global sounds further shaped his outlook, prompting him to develop original material by channeling an ongoing stream of ideas and shaping them into abstract pop songs. Comparisons to Arthur Russell led to his 2019 signing with Thrill Jockey. The EP Penalties of Love appeared before the album, which the artist characterized as a historical fiction of his own life.
