Biography
Shane Richie, the versatile British performer who has worked across acting, comedy, and television hosting, gained his widest recognition playing the roguish Alfie Moon in the long-running BBC serial EastEnders while quietly maintaining a parallel singing career. Born in 1964 to Irish parents and raised in the Willesden district of North West London, he frequently joined them at the Irish and country music nights his father organized in neighborhood clubs during his childhood. He entered show business as a teenager, taking a job as a bluecoat entertainer at the Pontins holiday camps, then transitioned into stand-up, making appearances on Sky TV and BBC One before becoming a regular host of various game shows. An early attempt to establish himself as a pop artist in the late 1990s yielded two albums, The Album in 1997 and Once Around the Sun in 2000, neither of which achieved commercial traction. His screen debut arrived in 2001 with the unconventional ITV soap Night & Day, a series that later developed a dedicated cult audience. The following year he joined EastEnders as Alfie Moon and quickly became a familiar face to millions.
A 2003 charity recording of Wham!’s “I’m Your Man” reached number two on the U.K. singles chart and marked his first chart success. Subsequent television work included parts in the comedy-drama Minder, the sitcom Benidorm, and the Alfie-focused EastEnders spin-off Redwater, interspersed with further game-show presenting duties. On stage he took roles in the musicals Boogie Nights and Scrooge. Between these commitments he continued to perform live, touring Britain with his own band in modest venues. In 2009 he was engaged to serve as opening act for Michael Jackson’s planned series of comeback concerts at London’s O2 Arena, an engagement canceled after Jackson’s death. Richie returned to recording in 2017 with the album A Country Soul, issued on EastWest, which revisited classic material by the Eagles, Stephen Stills, and Dobie Gray while also featuring an original composition written by the performer himself.
