Biography
Silk Rhodes, a duo devoted to off-center soul and post-disco revivalism, unites vocalist Sasha Desree with producer Michael Collins, both natives of Baltimore, Maryland. Their earliest appearance on record came via the 2014 compilation Our Vinyl Weighs a Ton, assembled to accompany the Stones Throw label documentary of identical name. On that collection, “Face 2 Face”—a plinking neo-boogie cut that sounds as if it had been retrieved from a record warehouse left untouched since 1984—sat directly between Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf’s “Methods” and Mayer Hawthorne’s “I Wish It Would Rain.” Months later the track surfaced as the A-side of a Stones Throw 7" single whose flip offered the sparse early-’70s-inspired ballad “Pains,” and both selections reappeared on the self-titled album issued that November.
