During the 1980s and 1990s, Sintesis ranked among Cuba's most favored musical ensembles. The group's origins trace back to 1976, when the vocal ensemble Tema IV combined forces with various rock and Afro-Cuban performers. Although rooted in conventional rock and roll instrumentation, the band incorporated influences drawn from African and Cuban traditions.

Throughout the 1980s, Sintesis gradually established its standing by sharing stages with figures including Amauri Perez, Silvio Rodrigues, and Donata Poveda. In the second half of that decade, the ensemble became a regular presence at global music events across nations worldwide, with the notable exception of the United States, where entry was barred by the American embargo on Cuba.

The year 1989 marked the release of their debut recording, Ancestros. Their follow-up effort, Ancestros II, emerged four years afterward. Permission to enter the United States came in 1997, enabling both their inaugural show there and the taping of a third album, Orishas, which saw release toward the end of autumn. Early in 2000, Yoruba Celebration made its appearance.
