Biography
Sister Bliss rose to prominence in Britain's electronica landscape as a founding member of Faithless. By the group's 1995 formation she had already spent eight years as one of the country's earliest female house DJs, bringing that background into her partnership with DJ Rollo Armstrong and Buddhist rapper Maxi Jazz. Piano lessons began at age five; later she added violin, saxophone, and bass. After her first DJ performance in 1987 she secured slots at Cream, the Gallery, and Ministry of Sound. In the early nineties she produced her own demos, and before meeting Armstrong she had already registered on the techno circuit with the 1993 single "Future Pulse," issued on the Italian DTC label. Those joint writing sessions with Armstrong eventually appeared under the Faithless name. Their debut album, Reverence, created an underground stir in 1996, while its track "Insomnia" became a decade-defining club staple that reached the Top Five across ten countries. The Mercury-nominated Sunday 8pm followed in 1998, and Outrospective arrived in 2001, eventually achieving platinum status.
Alongside this trajectory Sister Bliss maintained an international DJ schedule and scored music for film, television, and stage, among them Danny Boyle's 2000 screen version of Alex Garland's novel The Beach. The 2005 greatest-hits package Forever Faithless sold more than one and a half million copies before the band released its last studio album, The Dance, in 2010. Following the breakup the remaining members occasionally performed live as the stripped-down Faithless Sound System without Armstrong. During those years she supplied scores for the 2012 films Knife Fight and Sex & the City 2 while also working with Example on his chart-topping third album, Playing in the Shadows. Recording sessions with Dido surfaced on March 4, 2013 with the release of Girl Who Got Away. That same day Sister Bliss issued the single "Ain't There" through her reactivated Junkdog Records imprint, a label that subsequently put out material by Brooklyn-based Zebra Katz and the London duo I Said No.
