Biography
Solveig Slettahjell, the Norwegian jazz vocalist honored with multiple awards, entered the recording world in 2001 and has long worked alongside her Slow Motion Quintet. Born April 2, 1971, in Bærum, Norway, she trained at the Norwegian Academy of Music. After securing a contract with Curling Legs, she released her first solo project that same year under the name Slow Motion Orchestra. Captured live on May 22, 2001, in Oslo, the album took its title from the ensemble—later rebranded the Slow Motion Quintet—whose original lineup included Morten Qvenild on piano, Sjur Miljeteig on trumpet, Mats Eilertsen on bass, and Per Oddvar Johansen on drums.
Silver, her 2004 follow-up, likewise appeared in English and mixed jazz standards with newly written pieces. The record proved pivotal, securing the Spellemannsprisen for Jazz Album of the Year in 2005 and peaking at number 23 on the Norwegian albums chart. Pixiedust, issued in 2005, built on that acclaim by debuting at number 15. Good Rain followed in 2006 with a comparable approach, though sales tapered slightly. Domestic Songs marked a clear departure in 2007; recorded without the Slow Motion Quintet, the album placed Slettahjell at the piano and was tracked over ten days in her own home during February. Apart from scattered covers, its songs were written by Slettahjell, Miljeteig, and Peder Kjellsby.
Natt i Betlehem, released in 2008, adopted yet another direction as a Christmas collection captured between September 29 and October 2 inside a Bethlehem church. The austere, Norwegian-language sessions featured only Slettahjell on vocals, Miljeteig on trumpet, and Tord Gustavsen on piano, ultimately becoming her strongest commercial release by reaching the Top Five.
