Shane Boose, a New York City native raised on the Lower East Side, created the indie pop project Sombr. An early affinity for music drew him first toward classical forms, after which he pursued vocal studies at LaGuardia High and, at age 14, built a bedroom studio where he began composing and tracking material under that name.

Equal weight on sonic detail and confessional writing marks Sombr’s approach as a reflective voice suited to the social-media era. The 2020 social-media breakout of “Caroline” carried the teenage singer/songwriter from independent releases to a major-label deal, its sweeping cinematic backdrops, layered harmonies, and intense vocal delivery all central to the track’s impact. Work with producer Tony Berg—previously associated with Phoebe Bridgers and Michael Penn—shaped the 2023 EP In Another Life, an openness Sombr further pursued on the 2024 single “In Your Arms.”

After “Caroline” spread virally, Sombr issued additional singles across 2021 and 2022, among them “Nothing Left to Say,” “Fine,” “Through it All,” and “Willow.” Warner signed the artist in January 2023; subsequent tracks “Weak,” “Alibi,” “Never Find U,” “Silhouette,” and “My House Is Warm” followed, several of which appeared on the September 2023 Los Angeles sessions for In Another Life that also involved Boygenius. Momentum from the EP prompted the late-2023 releases “Would've Been You” and “I Don't Know You Anymore” before “In Your Arms” arrived the next year.
