Biography
Back in 1989 Gabriel Rene and Mei-Lwun Yee began exploring hip-hop together. Gabriel’s sister Gina Rene joined the project soon after. Keyboardist Andy Caldwell’s arrival moved the collective beyond basic dance music into experimental electronic territory, where they combined captivating vocals, deep house, and jungle/drum’n’bass with contemporary rhythm & blues, jazz, and funk influences.
The ensemble took the name Soulstice from the solstice, the moment the sun reaches its highest point, to evoke the soul at its own zenith. In April 2001 OM Records issued the group’s debut album, the 11-track trip-hop record Illusion.
