Emerging amid the mid-1990s, ambient dub-techno pair Sounds from the Ground achieved early visibility through the notable tracks Triangle in 1994 and Gather the following year. Once those two singles had succeeded, London-based producers Elliot Jones and Nick Woolfson shaped their first full-length effort, Kin, issued in 1996. Both the singles and that album appeared on Universal Egg, while Stateside distribution fell to the respected ambient imprint Waveform, where the record met favorable response. Although momentum arrived swiftly, the duo waited until 1999 before unveiling their next album, Mosaic, which reached American listeners the subsequent year via Waveform under the altered title Terra Firma. Throughout the 2000s Jones and Woolfson maintained a steady output of carefully assembled downtempo pieces realized on a blend of analog and digital equipment, yielding the albums Natural Selection in 2003, High Rising in 2006, and Brightwhitelight in 2008. During the opening half of the ensuing decade they prepared a remastered reissue of Kin while sustaining their consistent pace with further releases including The Maze in 2010, Widerworld in 2012, and Tribes in 2013. Marking two decades of activity, they issued the limited-edition vinyl-only set Alchemy in 2014.
