Spooks

Spooks formed in the late '90s, drawing from the Fugees' breakthrough in rap and R&B while adopting a comparable ethos and lineup format yet pursuing an altogether distinct sonic direction. The ensemble featured vocalist Ming Xia alongside MCs Mr. Booka-T, Vengeance, Water Water, and Hypno, and the presence of both male and female members prompted immediate parallels to the Fugees. Production choices set them apart, incorporating trip-hop and jungle influences while seldom adhering to conventional hip-hop frameworks. Capitalizing on this singular style, they cut S.I.O.S.O.S., Vol. 1 in 1999 for Artemis Records. The release achieved substantial traction across Europe, attaining gold status in France, Belgium, Sweden, and Germany, though it registered minimal impact within the United States. A subsequent reissue paired with the formation of a live band for concert appearances aimed to cultivate American interest, yet only the single "Things I've Seen" gained meaningful traction before the group faded from view.
