Stein performs under the stage name Stein—originally Einstein—as the Jamaican dancehall vocalist and songwriter Jermaine Shaw. His output centers mainly on energetic celebrations, marked by polished, effervescent beats and themes of intimacy and movement, though he also delivers tougher tracks dominated by firearm references. Shaw started singing publicly while still young, earning the Einstein nickname from a relative. During the middle of the 2000s he issued early singles and collaborated with producers including Stephen McGregor, Jordan McClure, and David Hayle. The 2007 release “Calibre” marked his breakthrough, after which he made his initial European tour in 2008 and cultivated listeners abroad. Additional credits from that period include a featured appearance on Major Lazer’s 2009 debut Guns Don't Kill People... Lazers Do, the Noah D collaboration “Killing Time” in the dubstep/drum'n'bass vein, and songwriting contributions for Bounty Killer and Beenie Man. In 2012 he entered a management agreement with the Caribbean music distributor Fox Fuse while launching his own imprint, New Planet Records. Subsequent activity encompassed a wide array of singles spanning soca to lovers rock, followed by the albums All or Nothing (2013), Determination (2015), and My Story: The Next Chapter (2017).
