London-based producer and DJ Steven Julien crafts off-kilter house alongside synth-funk while operating the respected Apron Records imprint. Recognition first arrived through his glitchy cosmic funk and acid electro output as FunkinEven, coupled with repeated joint efforts alongside Eglo Records labelmate Fatima. He established Apron Records during 2011 and joined Detroit’s Kyle Hall to form the FunkinEvil duo. By 2015 he had retired the FunkinEven alias in favor of performing under his own name. The gritty, wide-ranging full-length Fallen arrived in 2016, followed by the mini-LP Bloodline in 2018. He has continued releasing EPs, broadcasting monthly shows on NTS Radio, and performing at clubs globally. His first commercially issued mix, an installment of the DJ-Kicks series, appeared in 2024.

Born and raised in West London and of Grenadian heritage, Steven Julien began as a dancer before shifting into beat-making and rapping. He launched his recording career as FunkinEven and became one of the earliest signings to Eglo Records, the label founded by Sam Shepherd (Floating Points) and Alexander Nut. His 2009 debut EP Kleer included Fatima, initiating an ongoing partnership that extended across her albums and further FunkinEven projects such as the acclaimed 2012 Phone Line EP. Apron Records opened with a 2011 self-titled EP, after which he began hosting the monthly Apron Show on NTS Radio. The FunkinEvil collaboration with Detroit wunderkind Kyle Hall yielded two 12"s on the Wild Oats label. Additional joint releases with Delroy Edwards, Jay Daniel, Greg Beato, and Shanti Celeste preceded his retirement of the FunkinEven name in 2015.

A self-titled EP issued as St. Julien in 2014 preceded the 2015 A16 EP, his first release under his full name. Fallen, the 2016 album spanning deep house, broken beat, and ambient textures, came next. The raw mini-album Bloodline, issued with an accompanying slowed-down version, and the EP 8 Ball both surfaced in 2018. In 2019 Julien and Byron the Aquarius produced the Senay track “Osiris.” A 2023 reunion with Kyle Hall produced the Crown EP, which also featured James Massiah, K15, Vicky Flint, and a DāM-FunK remix. The new jack swing-style single “Wraap’t,” recorded with Fatima, appeared in 2024. Julien subsequently mixed a volume of !K7’s DJ-Kicks series that incorporated tracks by Hudson Mohawke, Todd Edwards, and Ryuichi Sakamoto.
