Biography
In 1980 the anarchist punk collective Subhumans assembled in Wiltshire’s Trowbridge area, with Dick handling vocals, Bruce on guitar, Phil on bass, and Trotsky on drums. Between 1980 and 1985 the U.K. outfit distinguished itself among British punk acts through literate songwriting and agile musicianship, bridging the Clash’s politically driven compositions and Crass’ radical sonic experiments. Issuing five full-length albums on their independent BLUURG label—The Day the Country Died, From the Cradle to the Grave, Worlds Apart, 29:29 Split Vision, and Rats—plus six EPs and assorted D.I.Y. cassettes, the group pressed both officials and the public to move beyond mere protest toward tangible social improvement. After an earlier dissolution that produced the side project Citizen Fish (with Dick also joining Culture Shock), the original lineup reconvened in 1998 and returned in 2004 with the live album Live in a Dive on Fat Wreck and the All Gone Live DVD via Cleopatra.
