Biography
Sweet Oblivion operates as a progressive rock project rather than a conventional band, centering on American vocalist and composer Geoff Tate, formerly of Queensryche, alongside Italian guitarist and bassist Simone Mularoni, keyboardist Emanuele Casali—both drawn from the veteran Italian progressive metal outfit DGM—and session drummer Paolo Caridi. Its expansive, turbulent yet refined textures fuse the lavish, catchy melodic metal associated with Tate’s prior group and the irregular rhythmic patterns, abrupt dynamic contrasts, and technical flourishes characteristic of DGM.
Frontiers Music directed Mularoni to compose material echoing the classic Queensryche style. He recruited bandmate Casali and brought in his frequent jamming partner Caridi on drums, an experienced player who had previously contributed to Angels and Demons and Killing Touch. In a written interview, Mularoni recounted submitting the tracks to Tate only to receive them back transformed into a style nearer to hip-hop than to Queensryche. Following negotiations among the guitarist, vocalist, and label, Tate completed his vocal tracks, reportedly while traveling on his tour bus. April saw the release of a single and video for “True Colors,” which garnered favorable notices, while the complete album Sweet Oblivion featuring Geoff Tate appeared in June.
